Flower Myths

The Most Common "Cheap" Flower Myths!

We're here to debunk some of the most common myths that are passed around wedding blogs and
Pinterest. We're talking everything from cheap greenery to those cheap candle centerpieces.

So, let’s talk about what cheap really means and what is actually cheap vs not so cheap. But first, can
we just say that we truly and fully loathe the word “cheap”! Besides, it’s not-so-nice connotation we
find it to be distasteful when talking about a wedding. Some great alternatives we love to use are
“budget savvy”, “economical” and “cost-effective”. Now that we got that out of the way let’s
dispel some myths!

1. Garlands are made from greenery, therefore, they must be very cost-effective. MYTH BUSTED!

Our garlands are handmade to give you the extra lush and full appearance. They are very labor-intensive
and typically take an hour to a couple hours to make depending on the length of the garland. We also
find that wedding couples tend to choose more trendy greens such as eucalyptus. Eucalyptus among
other greens such as italian ruscus, olive, and agonis are typically more expensive than traditional greens.
These greens can be twice the cost of traditional greens such as leatherleaf fern, salal (aka lemon leaf)
and podocarpus. Our garlands typically start around $15.00/per ft and go up depending on greenery
choice and if the wedding couples want to include other flowers like baby's breath or waxflower.

2. Local and seasonal blooms cost less than traditional blooms. MYTH BUSTED! (well kind of)

While sourcing flowers locally and in season is always a positive it's not always possible. In our area, we find
that most growers specialize in one or a couple of different flower species. Within those species, we find
the local growers typically have the more rare and uncommon varieties available for a higher price. So yes,
tulips may be in season, but no they may not be cheaper just because they are in season locally. However,
on the other hand, very specific and luxurious flowers such as lily of the valley, certain peony varieties, and
hydrangea are more affordable when in season locally.

3. Vases and candles equal low-cost centerpieces. MYTH BUSTED! (again to a degree)

While vases and candles seem to be a current trend and a classic look they are not always the most
affordable option. The standard centerpiece with 3 tiered clear glass vases, floating candles, and loose
greenery can run anywhere from $45 to $75 per table. P.S. Those vases are almost always rentals which
means you have to give them back to your florist. A wedding couple could easily have an all floral arrangement
in a non-rented vase for anywhere between $30-$60. So don't let those Pinterest photos fool you, candles,
vases and loose greenery aren't always the cheapest option.

4. Silk flowers are more affordable than fresh flowers. MYTH BUSTED!

While yes you can find some $1.00 and .50cent flowers at the dollar store you typically don't use those to make
bridal bouquets. We find that good quilty silk flowers cost the same if not more than fresh flowers. While
yes, you can argue that they last forever you have to think about the real reason you wanted to silk flowers.
